Beyoncé’s Violinist, Ezinma, Reveals Deep Impact of The Star on Her Life and Career

Ezinma, the renowned violinist also known as “Classical Bae,” catapulted to fame as a solo act, but it was her experience touring with Beyoncé that profoundly influenced her perception of the power of “sisterhood.”

In an interview following an intimate solo performance at the Chase Sapphire Lounge during the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, the 33-year-old Los Angeles-based artist opened up about the transformative opportunity.

“Having this sisterhood was something so powerful for me,” Ezinma shared, highlighting how she had faced criticism and moments of discouragement earlier in her career. The opportunity to join Beyoncé’s band, especially one comprising all women of colour, became a moment of affirmation for her.

Recounting the initial contact from Beyoncé’s musical director, Ezinma emphasized that it was a realization that she was “on the right track.” She reflected, “People are seeing you and hearing you,” and being part of Beyoncé’s band became an incredible experience that she still cherishes.

Ezinma, who participated in ‘The Formation World’ Tour during the Lemonade era and Beyoncé’s headlining 2018 Coachella shows, appreciated the ritualistic elements and pre-show routine of prayer. “She prays before [going on stage], and she’s a woman of faith, and that’s something that’s just really beautiful to bear witness to,”

Ezinma noted. “It’s just like the ritual of it all and getting to feel like you’re part of a team; that was also really awesome. For me, now, a lot of what I do is solo work. I don’t always get to work with people, especially when I’m performing live.”

Apart from playing with Stevie Wonder, which stands as one of the most exhilarating live performances in Ezinma’s repertoire, there’s another unforgettable moment that reshaped the trajectory of her life.

Another pivotal moment for Ezinma was when her father attended one of her performances in London. Despite initially preferring a medical career for his daughter—Ezinma had pursued pre-med before switching to music—her father embraced and understood her artistic journey.
