10 Female Musicians Who Left Us Too Soon
It is no secret that the glitz and glam of the entertainment industry mask the underworld of drugs, violence, and tragic deaths. This series provides a list of some of the most iconic musicians struck down in their prime.
Many died in horrific ways, others were the victims of unfortunate accidents or genetics, but they all left the world a little too soon, leaving behind bereaving fans, family and friends.
2. Janis Joplin (January 19, 1943 – October 4, 1970 ), one of the most famous blues musician, with a unique vocal style, dies at age 27 due to a heroin overdose.
3. Patsy Cline ( September 8, 1932 – March 5, 1963), an influential country musician and pop vocalist, died at age 30. She died in a plane crash as she was returning home from a benefit concert.
4. Amy Winehouse (14 September 1983 – 23 July 2011) , an eclectic singer known for her deep, sultry voice. The singer’s turbulent love life and alcoholism coupled with drug abuse resulted in her death. She was 27 when she died from alcohol poisoning.
5. Minnie Riperton (November 8, 1947 – July 12, 1979) , a musician with stunning vocal range, also known as “queen of the whistle register”, and mother of actress Maya Rudolph. She died at the age of 31, after succumbing to breast cancer.
6. Christina Grimmie (March 12, 1994 – June 10, 2016) , YouTube sensation, singer-songwriter, and second runner-up on The Voice season 6. A crazed fan opened fire and shot the singer thrice, resulting in her tragic death. She was 22.
7. Aaliyah ( January 16, 1979 – August 25, 2001) , a contemporary R&B singer, nicknamed the “princess of R&B”. Aged 22, Aaliyah died in a plane crash.
8. Cass Elliott (September 19, 1941 – July 29, 1974), also known as Mama Cass, member of Mamas and Papas, died at age 32 due to heart failure.
9. Karen Carpenter (March 2, 1950 – February 4, 1983) , drummer, singer and one part of duo The Carpenters. Towards the end of her life, the musician sought help to cure her anorexia nervosa but succumbed to the illness and died of a heart failure, at the age of 31.
10. Sulli, born Choi Jin-ri (March 29, 1994 – October 14, 2019), was a singer, actress and member of K-pop group f(x). The idol died by suicide at the age of 25. The reason was said to be depression caused by cyberbullying.
