10 Reasons We’ll Always be in Love with Lizzo
Do you ever wonder how well you really know all those musicians you adore? Well, just stew in that for a bit. So, right now, the woman of the hour is Lizzo because she once again shut down body shamers in a scathing Tik Tok video. The brief clip she posted, shows us a montage of the singer exercising while she claps back at her haters in a bold voiceover, “So I’ve been working out consistently for the last five years,” she said, “and it may come as a surprise to some of y’all that I’m not working out to have your ideal body type. I’m working out to have my ideal body type. And you know what type that is? None of your f–king business. Because I am beautiful, I am strong, I do my job and I stay on my job.” She went on to tell people to stop judging others and ended with a rather humorous, “Namaste, have a great day”. Now, going back to that question we put forth earlier. We all know Lizzo encourages body positivity, we know she’s a stellar flautist and vocalist…but what else?
So, voila, we give you a peek at a side to Lizzo you’ve never seen before.
1. Alrighty, let’s start simple. The singer’s birth name is actually Melissa Viviane Jefferson. At the age of 14 she formed a band called Cornrow Clique with her friends and that was when her nickname, ‘Lizzo’ was born. In fact, she even drew inspiration from Jay-Z’s single, ‘Izzo (H.O.V.A)’ when crafting her current stage name. Didn’t see that coming, did ya?

2. When Lizzo studied at the University of Houston, she was also in the marching band. So much for looking down on kids in the band, because boy, take a look at how far this queen’s come!

3. Okay, you might want to take a seat for this one. Lizzo has collaborated with the legendary Prince. The duo worked on a song titled, ‘Boy Trouble’. This tune featured on his 2014 album, ‘Plectrumelectrum’ and Lizzo described the experience as being “almost like a fairytale”.

4. For their very first projects, most musicians don’t immediately dabble with all processes involved in creating a song. But not Lizzo. For her first ever major EP, ‘Coconut Oil’, she did everything, from production to songwriting. She’s one brave gal, what else can we say?

5. When doing an interview with ‘Glamour’ it was revealed that Lizzo had a whopping 680 selfies on her phone. Well, for one who so often encourages self-love and self-acceptance. She certainly practices what she preaches. We’ll take notes.

6. In yet another interview, Lizzo sat down to create a playlist of her life, which included the one song she’d dance to at her wedding. Any guesses? Actually, don’t bother, this one’s too obscure. The woman chose the ‘Jurassic Park’ theme song by John Williams. Ahh what’s Lizzo without all her eccentricities?

7. Lizzo’s never been one for playing it safe when it comes to her outfit choices. That being said, the singer clarified that she absolutely hates it when people call plus sized women “brave” for dressing a certain way. The star explained, ““When people look at my body and be like, ‘Oh my God, she’s so brave,’ it’s like, ‘No, I’m not.’ I’m just fine. I’m just me. I’m just sexy.”

8. Speaking of plus sized women, Lizzo has always made sure that her crew of backup dancers are so. In fact, her group of dancers also go by the name, ‘The Big Grrrls’, in a way of paying tribute to Lizzo’s 2015 studio album.

9. As an ardent supporter of the LGBTQ community, Lizzo has performed at numerous Pride festivals. And here she is, in that dazzling pink bodysuit, at the Sacramento Pride Festival. Oh and here’s the kicker, when performing at these venues, she often refers to her fans as ‘Lizzbians’. And boy, do they love it.
