Macklemore Was First #1 Without Label, And More Facts

Macklemore is celebrating his 37th birthday and we couldn’t be happier. He is the star who was the first in a long time, according to Billboard, to hit No.1 spot without being backed by any major label with his song ‘Thrift Shop’. Of course he has been nabbed up since but that achievement paved way for the younger generation to dare to dream.

1. Macklemore aka Ben Haggerty was born in Seattle and first found hip hop through Digital Underground.
2. He first ran with a pseudonym ‘Professor Macklemore’ when he first released ‘Open You Eyes’ in 2000.
3. ‘Same Love’ a song about legalising same sex marriages had rumours flying that he was gay. But oh well, not that we know and love Tricia Davis and their two kids, we know that wasn’t true.
4. As you can tell by a lot of his latest music, he started writing lyrics and music when he was as young as 14, and was inspired by “a lot of East Coast underground hip hop.”

6. Ryan Lewis, his now long term collaborator and producer was actually his photographer in 2006.
7. When he won his first Grammy award, he sent a text to Kendrick saying, “You got robbed.” He really wanted Kendrick to win.

9. It isn’t very well known that Macklemore, successfully, battled alcoholism.
10. Macklemore’s alma mater — Garfield High School — was also where Quincy Jones and Jimi Hendrix went!
