Movies That Are STILL Banned in 2024

Movie bans persist in various countries globally for a range of reasons, with some restrictions still enforced in 2024. Such bans typically arise when a film promotes content that contradicts the beliefs or values of a particular nation’s government or populace.

While outright violence is less commonly cited as a reason for banning today, restrictions due to sexual content still occur. In countries like the United States and much of Western Europe, governmental bans on films are rare, though not unheard of, often surprising citizens who are accustomed to greater freedom of expression.

‘The Da Vinci Code’: Banned in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Pakistan, Samoa, the Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka and Vatican City for “divisive depictions of Christianity’s origins.”

‘Barbie’: Banned in Algeria, Kuwait, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Russia, & Vietnam for several reasons including ‘contradict values of faith and morality’ and ‘promote homosexuality'”, “that appeared to show China’s contested territorial claims in the South China Sea.” and not [meeting] the aims and objectives set out by the head of state, [and] to preserve and strengthen traditional Russian spiritual and moral values.”

‘Cannibal Holocaust’: Banned in Iceland & New Zealand for “extreme violence, cannibalism, and animal cruelty.”

‘Beauty And The Beast‘: Banned in Kuwait for “split-second moment between LeFou and another man implying a future relationship.”

‘American Sniper‘: Banned in Iraq for “‘rowdy’ screenings and growing complaints from both moviegoers and the Iraqi government.”

‘Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse‘: Banned in many Middle East countries for “allusions to trans pride”

‘Jojo Rabbit‘: Banned in Russia for “Twentieth Century Fox’s branch for the Commonwealth of Independent States has reported to the Russian film news outlet Kinoreporter that the company does not plan to distribute Taika Waititi’s film Jojo Rabbit in Russia. Twentieth Century Fox did not explain the reasoning behind that decision.”

‘Lightyear‘: Banned in many countries under the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation for “on-screen kiss between two women.”

‘The Dark Knight‘: Banned in Hong Kong for “the Film, Newspaper and Articles Management Office believes that the film contains violent content and the level is not suitable for outdoor broadcasting.”

‘Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood And Honey‘: Banned in Hong Kong, Macau and presumably Mainland China for “References to the original, family-friendly version of Winnie the Pooh have been used to protest against President Xi Jinping in recent years” and “Censors in China have since clamped down on references to AA Milne’s character.”
