Selena Gomez & Songwriting: Moments of Self-Discovery

Today, our birthday girl, Selena Gomez, turns 28. And the celebrations are in full swing! At only 28 years old, Gomez has already become quite a multi-faceted woman and an industry heavyweight. After soaring out of her Disney cocoon, Selena has not only taken a wonderful dip into the world of music, but she’s tried her hand at numerous other avenues.
The young star has dabbled in a bit of voice acting. At the age of merely 17, she was appointed as a UNICEF ambassador. The gal’s got her very own makeup and clothing line, oh and she’s also been the executive producer on one of the biggest Netflix shows out there: ’13 Reasons Why’. And this is just the tip of the iceberg, there’s so much more to Selena Gomez that’s worth talking about. But we decided to pick out one of her most defining moments, the release of her third studio album ‘Rare’.
‘Rare’ confronted a lot of difficult issues in the star’s life, from her battle with lupus, to a kidney transplant and to finally moving on from an unhealthy relationship. On one hand, this album revealed a whole new side to Selena Gomez. Perhaps we can even go as far as saying that ‘Rare’ was her career-defining moment. With the tracks on this album, she earned her very first No. 1 claim on the Billboard Hot 100, and soon ‘Rare’ also occupied the throne on the Billboard 200 Album Chart.
But apart from her chart wins, this album has helped Gomez to heal, grow and overcome all that she’s been through. And so, we decided to pick out some of her most poignant lyrics that speak entirely of self-discovery. So, enough chit chat, let’s start…

I’ll stay vulnerable’

3. ‘Betrayed by your imagination
In over my head, but that’s alright
So won’t you call me in the morning?’
– Crowded Room
4. ‘And what hurts the most is people can go
From people you know to people you don’t’
– People You Know
5. ‘No self-sabotage, no letting my thoughts run
Me and the spiral are done
Burn this camouflage I’ve been wearing for months
Tryna let a little happy in for once ‘ – Let Me Get Me

Words were like licorice to the taste
But slowly, all the sugar, it went to waste’ – Kinda Crazy

With a drop-drop and I let you go’ – Cut You Off

When I speak, my body listens’

Living out of the scene, out in the wild
Learning to breathe up in the clouds, far from the crowds
I can’t believe, I can be loud’ – A Sweeter Place

I needed to lose you to find me
This dance, it was killing me softly
I needed to hate you to love me’
