‘American Dreamer’ (2024) is a film that deserves more attention than it initially received. Shot during the pandemic three years ago, this darkly comedic gem made its debut at Tribeca 2022 but unfortunately got lost in the shuffle.
However, thanks to a wise decision by the filmmakers, including director Paul Dektor and screenwriter/producer Theodore Melfi, the film underwent a recut and is finally getting the recognition it deserves.

The story follows Phil Loder, played by Peter Dinklage, an economics professor down on his luck until he stumbles upon the opportunity of a lifetime – owning a massive mansion for a fraction of its value. However, there’s a catch: he must allow the eccentric owner, 90-year-old Astrid Finnelli (Shirley MacLaine), to live in the attached apartment until the end of her life.
What seems like a dream quickly turns into a nightmare as Phil’s investment is threatened by Astrid’s unexpected longevity and her daughter’s legal intervention.
Dinklage shines in his role as Phil, portraying the character’s flawed yet endearing nature with aplomb. MacLaine adds depth to the film with her portrayal of the enigmatic Astrid, while Matt Dillon delivers a memorable performance as Phil’s slippery friend and real estate broker, Dell.
Despite its comedic elements, ‘American Dreamer’ delves into deeper themes of ambition, greed and the pursuit of happiness. Director Paul Dektor expertly navigates the delicate balance between comedy and drama, creating a film that is both entertaining and thought-provoking.
