Bong Joon-ho’s Most Straightforward Film: Why It’s His Most Terrifying Yet

Among auteurs known for their distinctive styles, Bong Joon-ho stands out as a master of genre-blending and dark satire. His acclaim skyrocketed with ‘Parasite’, which won Best Picture and Best Director at the Oscars in 2020, highlighting his ability to craft compelling, genre-defying films. Since then, audiences have revisited his earlier works, discovering films that are as provocative as they are entertaining. One of Bong’s most notable films is the 2009 psychological thriller ‘Mother’, which showcases his exceptional storytelling skills.

In ‘Mother’, Bong presents a gripping narrative centred around a widowed mother, played by Kim Hye-ja, who is fiercely protective of her adult son, Do-joon (Won Bin). The story unfolds when Do-Joon, who is intellectually disabled, becomes a suspect in the murder of a high school girl.
