‘Border’: This Overlooked Fantasy Gem Boasts an Almost Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score

Swedish novelist John Ajvide Lindqvist, known for his hit ‘Let the Right One In,’ captivated audiences again with the screen adaptation of his novel ‘Handling of the Undead.’ However, one of his most intriguing stories, ‘Border,’ has flown under the radar despite its compelling narrative.

‘Border,’ a 2018 film directed by Iranian-Danish filmmaker Ali Abbasi, tells the story of Tina, a social outcast who discovers she is not human but a legendary troll. This dark fantasy delves into the search for identity, with powerful performances and stunning special effects creating an enchanting and thought-provoking experience. Despite its critical acclaim and numerous awards, including a win in the Un Certain Regard category at Cannes and several Guldbagge Awards, ‘Border’ remains relatively obscure.

The film explores themes of difference and acceptance, portraying Tina as a customs agent whose unusual appearance and heightened senses make her uniquely suited for her job but alienate her from society.

When she meets Vore, a man who shares her troll heritage, Tina begins to accept herself. However, she is forced to confront Vore’s darker intentions as he seeks revenge on humanity through sinister means. ‘Border’ stands out for its blend of fantasy, romance, and Nordic detective elements, offering a raw and complex portrayal of “monsters” as avatars for real-world outsiders.

The film’s exploration of identity, gender, and colonial violence adds depth to its narrative, making it a powerful allegory for marginalized experiences. While it may not have gained widespread recognition, ‘Border’ is a film that resonates with those who have felt like outsiders and continues to grow in relevance.
