The 1990s marked a golden era for animation in both film and television. The Disney Renaissance spurred a competitive landscape among various studios vying for audience attention and the creation of enduring franchises. Influential figures like Don Bluth and Jeffrey Katzenberg emerged as key players, leading projects that primarily featured traditional hand-drawn animation. However, alternative techniques, such as stop-motion animation—one of the oldest forms—began gaining traction.
Recognizing its potential, DreamWorks ventured into stop-motion with ‘Chicken Run’ (2000), a collaboration between U.S. and European studios that proved highly successful. The film held the title of highest-grossing DreamWorks release until it was surpassed by ‘Shrek’ (2001). Stop-motion, often referred to as “claymation,” became a hallmark of Aardman Animations, founded in 1972 by British animators Peter Lord and David Sproxton. Their early work, including ‘Creature Comforts’ (1989), established Aardman’s reputation, particularly after it won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film.

The beloved characters Wallace and Gromit debuted shortly after, featuring in a series of acclaimed shorts before their first full-length film, ‘The Curse of the Were-Rabbit’ (2005). During this period, Disney also explored stop-motion with ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ (1993) and ‘James and the Giant Peach’ (1996), diversifying their animation portfolio, albeit reluctantly due to the higher production costs.
Katzenberg’s DreamWorks sought to collaborate with Aardman, culminating in ‘Chicken Run’, which parodied ‘The Great Escape’. Featuring an impressive cast, including Mel Gibson and Miranda Richardson, the film quickly became the highest-grossing stop-motion film at the time.

Although overshadowed by ‘Shrek’ in subsequent years, ‘Chicken Run’ remains significant, paving the way for future stop-motion successes and Aardman’s continued creativity, including the anticipated ‘Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl’ slated for release in Christmas 2024.
