‘Detective Pikachu’: This Video Game Movie Sets the Standard for Exceptional World-Building

Video games often provide a more immersive experience than films due to their interactive nature, demanding greater investment from players. When ‘Detective Pikachu’ was released in 2016, it stood out as one of the best video game adaptations, offering a glimpse into the Pokémon universe, despite some flaws common in earlier films.

The Pokémon franchise remains hugely popular but has suffered from Nintendo’s traditional approach to its intellectual property. While the company produces fantastic content, it frequently confines innovative ideas to side games and spin-offs, leaving the mainline series feeling repetitive and stale over the years.

‘Detective Pikachu’ is loosely based on the 2016 game of the same name. The story follows Tim Goodman, who travels to Rhyme City after the death of his father, a detective. There, he meets a talking Pikachu, who is his father’s partner. Together, they unravel the mystery surrounding the detective’s death, taking the audience on a heartwarming adventure through Rhyme City.

The film’s setting, Rhyme City, is its strongest element. Created by businessman Howard Clifford, the city prohibits Pokémon battles, allowing humans and Pokémon to coexist peacefully. Each resident is often accompanied by a Pokémon, contributing to daily life, from directing traffic to working in cafes. This portrayal captures the essence of the Pokémon world in a way the games rarely achieve.

In  ‘Detective Pikachu’ Pokémon are integrated into everyday life, transforming them from mere combatants into beloved companions. This unique perspective shifts the focus from fighting to friendship and community. While some critics argue the film fails to explain Pokémon to newcomers, it effectively presents a relatable world where humans and Pokémon thrive together. Ultimately, ‘Detective Pikachu’ embodies a vision for future video game movies, advocating for sincerity and creativity over cynicism.
