Doctor Strange Unlikely to Appear in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

In the forthcoming ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, Benedict Cumberbatch’s character, Doctor Strange, will not be joining the Avengers. Stephen Strange will not be appearing in the eagerly awaited sequel, Cumberbatch stated in a recent interview with Variety. Insights regarding the sorcerer’s potential comeback to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) were provided by the actor, though. Strange’s final appearance was in Sam Raimi’s ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’, where he faced the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and stopped her from pursuing great power.

The return of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes on the big screen is marked by ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. The Avengers’ existence and organizational structure are still uncertain in the current MCU after the events of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ left the squad in chaos. Although Doomsday’s plot is being kept under wraps, one important fact has been confirmed: the squad will battle Doctor Doom. Unexpectedly, Robert Downey Jr., who played Iron Man for more than ten years, will play the legendary villain.

The Russo Brothers have been hired by Marvel Studios to helm ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and its follow-up, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’. Having collaborated with Benedict Cumberbatch on previous Avengers movies, such as those centred on the fight against Thanos (Josh Brolin), the Russo Brothers are no strangers to the franchise. Cumberbatch disclosed that his character will make a comeback for ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, even though Doctor Strange is not appearing in Doomsday. In the upcoming part, the squad will definitely need all the assistance they can get given the enormous threat that Doctor Doom poses.

Despite Doctor Strange’s absence, other MCU heroes are probably going to oppose ‘Doom in Avengers: Doomsday’.

After defeating Dar-Benn in The Marvels, Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) is still a formidable force. If Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) makes it through the events of ‘Captain America: Brave New World’, he might join as Captain America. With the introduction of new heroes in the MCU’s post-Endgame projects, a new Avengers cast is now possible.

Fans may expect to see how the saga develops towards ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ as Phase Five of the MCU continues with movies like ‘Thunderbolts’ and ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’. On 1st May 2026, the movie is expected to be released in theatres across the United States.
