Dumbledore Actor Richard Harris’ Son Questions Need For Harry Potter Reboot

Jared Harris, son of the late Richard Harris, has expressed reservations about the upcoming Harry Potter series reboot on Max. While fans eagerly anticipate the revival, Harris made it clear that he has no interest in taking on the role of Dumbledore, a character his father played in the first two films of the franchise.

In a recent interview Harris openly questioned the necessity of reviving such an iconic series, stating, “No, thank you,” when asked if he’d consider stepping into his father’s shoes. Harris shared his belief that the original films were extraordinary and shouldn’t be altered.

“I don’t understand. The films were fantastic; leave them alone,” he remarked, echoing the sentiments of many fans and industry figures who believe the original adaptations should remain untouched. Despite acknowledging that the television series might explore parts of the story that were missed in the films, Harris remains unconvinced that a reboot is necessary.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s decision to create a new Harry Potter series for Max has sparked mixed reactions. The series is expected to be a faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s seven novels, with each season focusing on one book. This format is intended to offer deeper exploration of the storylines and characters, something the original films could not achieve due to time constraints.

Richard Harris, Jared’s father, played Dumbledore in ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone ‘and ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’. His portrayal of the wise and warm headmaster left a lasting legacy within the franchise. Following his death in 2002, the role was taken over by Michael Gambon, who continued Dumbledore’s journey for the remainder of the series.

HBO and Max CEO Casey Bloys shared his enthusiasm for the reboot, emphasising that the series offers audiences a chance to experience Hogwarts in a fresh and detailed way. J.K. Rowling, despite controversies surrounding her, remains an executive producer on the project, contributing to its anticipation.

The new adaptation will feature a completely different cast from the original films, aiming to attract a younger audience while staying true to the essence of Rowling’s books. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, who portrayed the lead trio, will not reprise their roles in the series.

Daniel Radcliffe has also shared his thoughts on the reboot, stating that he does not plan to return as Harry Potter. He believes that this new iteration offers creators a chance to start anew, without relying on the legacy of the original cast to carry the story forward.
