Exploring Joaquin Torres in ‘Captain America: Brave New World’

The highly anticipated trailer for the fourth Captain America film, ‘Captain America: Brave New World,’ has finally dropped. Marvel fans were thrilled to see Sam Wilson, portrayed by Anthony Mackie, donning the Captain America mantle. The trailer also introduced Harrison Ford’s Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross, now transformed into the Red Hulk, adding another layer of excitement.
However, perhaps one of the most intriguing reveals was the appearance of Joaquin Torres, played by Danny Ramirez, who takes on the role of the new Falcon. This follows the storyline from the comic books where Torres steps in as the Falcon after Wilson becomes Captain America. Fans of ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ will remember that Torres walked away with Sam’s wings at the series’ conclusion, hinting at this new development.

Joaquin Torres: From Comics to Screen
To understand what might be in store for Torres, it’s worth looking back at his origins in the Marvel comics. Created by Nick Spencer and Daniel Acuña, Joaquin Torres first appeared in ‘Captain America: Sam Wilson #3’ in 2015. Torres, who immigrated to the USA at six years old, was depicted as a passionate advocate for the Mexican community.
His journey took a dark turn when he was captured by the Sons of the Serpent and subjected to experiments by Karl Malus. With the DNA of Redwing, Sam Wilson’s falcon, Torres was transformed into a falcon/human hybrid. Rescued by Sam Wilson, Torres became the new Falcon and Wilson’s sidekick, joining him in battles against villains like the Serpent Society.

A Different Path in the MCU
However, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has taken creative liberties with many characters, and Joaquin Torres is no exception. In the MCU, Torres is introduced as a friend and former colleague of Sam Wilson from the United States Air Force. Danny Ramirez’s portrayal in ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ presented Torres as an eager ally, eventually inheriting the Falcon wings from Wilson.
This departure from the comic book origins suggests that Torres’ character in ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ will be more grounded, akin to Wilson’s portrayal as a realistic and relatable hero. Instead of a falcon/human hybrid, the MCU’s Torres is likely to remain human, focusing on his skills and relationship with Wilson.
