Exploring the Twists of ‘It’s What’s Inside’: A Body-Switching Thriller Unpacked

‘It’s What’s Inside’, written and directed by Greg Jardin, revolves around eight college friends who gather for a pre-wedding party, expecting a night of relaxation filled with drinks, d**gs, and games.

The group includes Shelby, Cyrus, Dennis, Maya, Nikki, Brooke, Reuben, and Forbes. However, the arrival of Forbes with a mysterious suitcase changes everything. Inside is a machine that enables body-swapping, setting off a chain of events that takes a dark turn.

As the night unfolds, the body-switching machine creates chaos, leading to the shocking deaths of two players. Panic ensues, and with the police on their way, everyone finds themselves trapped in bodies that aren’t their own. Madison Davenport, who plays Beatrice, Forbes’ sister, discussed the challenges of acting in a body-switch thriller. “They did a really good job in the script,” she noted, praising the clear direction that helped the cast navigate their complex roles.

Tensions escalate when Nikki, who now inhabits Brooke’s body, grows furious, desperate to return to her life as a social media influencer. Meanwhile, Shelby hatches a plan to stay in Nikki’s body while switching Cyrus and Reuben to evade responsibility when the police arrive. In a surprising twist, Nikki collaborates with Dennis to incapacitate Shelby, forcing Forbes to rewire everyone back into their original bodies, albeit with a few unexpected swaps.

As the situation spirals further, the narrative thickens. Beatrice, portrayed by Davenport, enters the fray, demanding the body-swapping machine from her brother. In a shocking revelation, it is unveiled that Forbes is actually in Beatrice’s body, while she has been impersonating him the entire time. This twist adds layers to the story, leading to a thrilling climax.

The plot reveals that Beatrice’s motives are rooted in revenge for a past incident involving Dennis. Years earlier, after a brief encounter, he denied their relationship, labelling her as “crazy.” This rejection triggered a traumatic event, resulting in Beatrice’s mental health struggles and subsequent hospitalisation. Now, she plans her revenge by manipulating the situation to her advantage.

In the chilling finale of ‘It’s What’s Inside’, Beatrice successfully wires Dennis’ trust fund to an offshore account and takes over Nikki’s life, effectively stealing the identity of someone she envied.

The film concludes with tantalising possibilities, as discussions about sequels circulate among the cast. Alycia Debnam-Carey, who plays Nikki, expressed enthusiasm for a potential follow-up, saying she would “100% come back” for another round.

In a recent panel discussion, the cast reflected on their experiences portraying multiple characters. Gavin Leatherwood, who plays Dennis, highlighted the importance of rehearsals in capturing the essence of each character. By watching each other perform, the actors aimed to embody the distinct mannerisms without resorting to mere impressions, enhancing the film’s overall authenticity. With its intricate plot and compelling performances, It’s What’s Inside leaves audiences eagerly anticipating what lies ahead.
