Farrell vs. Depp vs. Mikkelsen: Comparing the Best Grindelwald Performances
Gellert Grindelwald was a threat to the wizarding world before Voldemort’s reign of terror. In contrast to Voldemort’s unchecked wickedness, Grindelwald fought for wizards’ independence, even at the expense of the Muggle world. Despite his far from honourable intentions, he was a complicated villain who was thoroughly examined in the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ series. Mads Mikkelsen, Colin Farrell, and Johnny Depp all portrayed Grindelwald in different ways, highlighting his complex psyche.
In ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’, Colin Farrell’s Grindelwald, disguised as Percival Graves, demonstrated the character’s capacity for manipulation. Grindelwald emanated power and a delusion of security in his role as Graves. He used deliberate persuasion and subtle intimidation to take advantage of Credence Barebone’s weaknesses in order to achieve his goals. Farrell’s performance effectively conveyed Grindelwald’s slyness and the subdued danger that lies underlying his charisma.

The magnetism and ideological fervour of Johnny Depp’s Grindelwald were highlighted in ‘The Crimes of Grindelwald’. In contrast to Farrell’s portrayal, Depp presented Grindelwald as a visionary leader who enthused followers with promises of freedom from Muggle oppression rather than terror. His main tool was words, which he used to manipulate with terrifying accuracy and give hope to people who were fed up with the status quo. Depp’s Grindelwald was especially terrifying because of his reserved portrayal and the serene brutality of his character.
In ‘The Secrets of Dumbledore’, Mads Mikkelsen recast Grindelwald as a more violent and desperate character. He was portrayed as a determined general who, in order to accomplish his objectives, would turn to violence and corruption—even the desecration of the enchanted qilin. Mikkelsen gave his villainy more dimension by imbuing the character with a ruthless resolve and obvious distress over his disagreement with Dumbledore.

Although every performer contributed something unique to Grindelwald, Depp’s performance is notable for its variety. Without largely relying on violence, his portrayal of Grindelwald was both captivating and horrifying due to his skilful blending of manipulation, conviction, and underlying pain.
