In recent times, the dominance of blockbuster and tentpole movies produced by major studios has been undeniable. This trend has been significantly influenced by the massive success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has spurred numerous other franchises to try and replicate that success.
However, many of these attempts have fallen short, flooding cinemas with high-budget films boasting flashy visual effects and star-studded casts. This saturation has led to what some describe as “blockbuster fatigue,” with audiences craving something different from the typical Hollywood formula.

Amidst this blockbuster-heavy landscape, there has been a notable resurgence of arthouse and unconventional films thanks to studios like A24, Searchlight Pictures, and platforms like Netflix. They have helped bring back attention to films that prioritise storytelling, character development, and unique perspectives over spectacle and franchise-building.
Despite the rise of arthouse cinema, superhero movies continue to reign supreme at the box office. Recent releases such as the latest Spiderman and Batman films have not only garnered critical acclaim but have also been major commercial successes. However, this success comes alongside a growing sentiment of “superhero fatigue,” with some prominent figures in the industry, like Martin Scorsese, questioning the artistic merit of these blockbuster franchises.
The film industry, beyond its fixation on blockbusters and superheroes, has faced criticism for its over-reliance on remakes, adaptations, and formulaic action films. This trend has sparked discussions about the lack of originality and risk-taking in Hollywood, with calls for more diverse storytelling and innovative ideas.
In the midst of these debates, independent films have remained a vital part of the cinematic landscape. They have always been valued for their creativity, willingness to take risks, and ability to explore unconventional narratives. In the past, studios like Miramax and Lionsgate Films were instrumental in supporting indie filmmakers and bringing their unique visions to the screen. This support led to the discovery of talents like Quentin Tarantino and Steven Soderbergh and the distribution of cult classics that challenged norms and pushed boundaries.
The recent revival of art films can be attributed to several factors, including audience fatigue with blockbusters, the accessibility of streaming platforms offering a diverse range of indie content, and the success of studios dedicated to arthouse cinema. This resurgence has not only breathed new life into genres like psychological thrillers, teen dramas, and comedies but has also encouraged a broader exploration of storytelling styles and themes within the industry.
