For an entire generation, Christopher Reeve embodied Superman on screen, but his life took a tragic turn after a horseback riding accident left him paralyzed from the neck down. The documentary ‘Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story’ explores the man behind the superhero, revealing how his close friend and fellow Juilliard classmate, Robin Williams, helped him regain hope after the accident. While Reeve symbolized strength as Superman, Williams became a real-life hero to him during one of his darkest moments.
Williams, known for his iconic role as Mork from ‘Mork & Mindy’, and Reeve, who starred as Superman, both took risks playing these roles early in their careers. Despite the difference in characters, their bond transcended Hollywood. As their stars rose, their friendship remained strong, with Reeve presenting Williams with awards and celebrating his success.

After Reeve’s accident, he battled severe depression and was close to giving up. But it was Williams who brought him laughter and joy during that dark time. Disguised as a doctor, Williams visited Reeve in the hospital, performing an impromptu comedy skit. Reeve later credited Williams with being the first to make him laugh again after the accident, reminding him that life was still worth living.
The documentary also highlights how Williams supported Reeve’s family, helping them with various needs, including securing transportation for Reeve's Academy Awards appearance. While Reeve was admired for his bravery, Williams demonstrated the kind of warmth and friendship that mirrored the compassion Superman embodies. Their friendship, detailed in ‘Super/Man’, showcases how Williams became a real-life hero, using his humour and kindness to lift up his friend when he needed it the most.
