‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’: Why This 27-Year-Old Teen Slasher is Still an Underrated Classic

In the late 1990s, the “post-Scream-slasher” wave breathed new life into the horror genre, thanks to Wes Craven’s ‘Scream’. Its blend of meta-humour, iconic Ghostface, and engaging characters revitalized interest in slasher films. This resurgence led to many teen slashers like ‘The Faculty’ and ‘Urban Legend’, all trying to capture ‘Scream’s success.

One standout from this era is ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’, a 1997 slasher by Kevin Williamson, who also penned ‘Scream’. The film was a financial hit, grossing over $120 million on a $17 million budget, but didn’t fare well with critics, holding a 46% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite this, it remains memorable for its intense atmosphere and gripping chase scenes.

Set in the picturesque Southport, North Carolina, the film utilizes its seaside town setting to great effect, making it feel like a character in its own right. From the ominous opening shot of the Atlantic Ocean to the various local spots that heighten the tension, the setting adds depth to the story. The film’s chase scenes, particularly those involving Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character, Helen, are some of its most thrilling moments.

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ may not have the same acclaim as some of its contemporaries, but its summer horror vibe, tense sequences, and engaging setting ensure it holds a place in pop culture. Fans can revisit it on MGM+ and look forward to a reboot in 2025, which might renew interest in the original classic.
