‘Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess’ Review: A Cult Classic in the Making?

It’s never easy to predict which games will become cult classics, but if 2024 has a standout contender, it’s ‘Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess.’ Developed and published by Capcom, this game is a unique blend of action and strategy, reminiscent of a time when major studios were more experimental.

‘Kunitsu-Gami’ is billed as a ‘Kagura Action Strategy’ game, combining hack-and-slash elements with innovative tower defence tactics. The game is set on Mt. Kafuku, a mountain plagued by creatures called the Seethe, who emerge from traditional torii gates. Players take on the role of Soh, who must protect the Maiden Yoshiro as she purifies the mountain’s corrupted villages. The narrative is minimalistic, relying on evocative silent storytelling to set the tone.

At the heart of ‘Kunitsu-Gami’ lies a game of trade-offs. Players must manage crystals to carve a path for Yoshiro while upgrading villagers to defend against nightly onslaughts. The game requires strategic positioning and decision-making, as some locations are easier to defend than others.

During the day, Soh juggles various tasks such as rescuing villagers, collecting crystals, and assigning roles. These roles range from opening new areas to repairing defences. As the game progresses, players face increasing challenges, with villagers providing unique abilities, like slowing down enemies or unleashing powerful attacks.

One of the most thrilling aspects of ‘Kunitsu-Gami’ is guiding Yoshiro to each gate, a journey filled with tense moments and a rewarding sense of accomplishment. The game’s difficulty ramps up, making progress feel genuinely earned. While some levels can be lengthy and taxing, the game’s pace generally keeps players engaged, with occasional surprises to maintain interest.

‘Kunitsu-Gami’ also features boss battles and village-building elements. Boss fights offer a break from the tower defence mechanics, focusing more on traditional combat. The village-building aspect is straightforward, primarily involving assigning villagers to tasks. This area serves as a hub for upgrading both villagers and Soh, adding another layer of strategy to the game.

The game’s presentation is one of its strongest points. From detailed enemy designs to the aesthetic touches in the upgrade tent, every aspect feels crafted with care. These elements, while not essential to gameplay, add richness to the experience that enhances its appeal.

While ‘Kunitsu-Gami’ may not suit everyone’s tastes, it stands out for its creativity and cohesive style. In a market filled with numerous action and strategy games, ‘Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess’ carves its niche, offering a distinctive experience that could well become a cult classic.
