Liam Hemsworth Feared Driving Laura Dern on Motorcycle in ‘Lonely Planet’
Liam Hemsworth took no risks when it came to ensuring Laura Dern’s safety on the set of ‘Lonely Planet’. In their new OTT romance, the actors’ characters, Owen and Katherine, share a motorcycle ride through Morocco, but Hemsworth admits it was a nerve-wracking day on set despite his experience.
Recalling the scene, Hemsworth explained that although he’s ridden motorbikes for years, this was a different challenge. The bike was old, heavy, and he wasn’t used to riding with someone else. “I didn’t want to crash,” he said. “Let’s do a practice run and wear proper gear.”

Despite Dern’s confidence in his abilities, Hemsworth was cautious, insisting on a rehearsal to ease his nerves. “You might be fine, but the responsibility’s on me,” he noted, emphasising his concern for her safety.
The pressure was heightened as Dern wore a dress, and Hemsworth knew even a slow fall could cause serious injury.
Dern praised Hemsworth’s protective instincts, recalling how he ensured she wore a helmet, despite suggestions to remove it for better visibility in the scene. “He was like, ‘No, no, no, she’s wearing a helmet,’” she said.
Written and directed by Susannah Grant, ‘Lonely Planet’ follows reclusive novelist Katherine (Dern), who attends a writer’s retreat in Morocco to overcome her creative block. There, she meets Owen (Hemsworth), and their connection blossoms into an intense, life-changing romance.
