‘ME’: The Most Bizarre and Brilliant Musical of 2024 is a 20-Minute Animated Short

Don Hertzfeldt is well-known for his wordless, abstract animated shorts, such as ‘It’s Such a Beautiful Day’ and ‘World of Tomorrow’. But perhaps his most bizarre and provocative musical short to date is ‘ME’. Through captivatingly straightforward animation and a diverse range of musical genres, this visually gorgeous and darkly humorous short examines human frailties and narcissism. ‘ME’ goes so quickly that it might take several viewings to properly comprehend its impact, but once everything comes together, it makes a lasting impression.

It’s the kind of movie that makes you want to tell people about it with enthusiasm, seeing their faces change from interest to confusion as you narrate its strange but poignant scenes. It is impossible to overlook Hertzfeldt’s artistic merits because of the way that time machines, conceited characters, and societal satire are all skillfully incorporated into its distinctive animation style and intense soundtrack.

‘ME’, according to Hertzfeldt, is a tale about grief, selfishness, and the people we know. That idea is undoubtedly fulfilled by the movie, which shows a father who is so preoccupied with his own personal trauma—represented by a seemingly unimportant basin—that he neglects his wife, son, and even the world that is falling apart around him. In the meantime, he constructs a device that reinforces people’s self-absorption by reflecting their pictures back to them. As they drift away and eventually turn into a black hole that destroys the Earth, a woman who is too preoccupied to tend to her child—who just so happens to be a floating eyeball—watches helplessly. Hertzfeldt intersperses these bizarre, exaggerated scenes with humorous moments to counterbalance the devastating aspect of human selfishness.

‘ME’ emoji-style communication, in which characters express themselves with simple symbols rather than words, adds humour to its weighty topics. When a parent uses exclamation marks to chastise his son, the youngster calmly responds with a toilet emoji, hilariously defusing the situation. The film is easier to watch and more sympathetic because of these ridiculous scenes, which exaggerate but instantly recognize common problems.

With its smooth transitions between frantic, high-energy percussion and intensely emotive, operatic melodies, ME’s music is every bit as powerful as its images. The audience is quickly drawn in by the opening’s hectic rhythm, and the eerie rendition of ‘I Dreamt I Dwelt in Marble Halls’ arouses intense emotion despite the graphic’s unsettling depiction of a nervous system twisted in wires.

‘ME’ conveys a strong and unambiguous message about human nature, in contrast to many surreal movies that feel strange just for being strange. It encourages viewers to examine their own self-centeredness while simultaneously finding amusement in the ridiculousness of life. The film is one of the most original musicals ever made because of its remarkable fusion of humour, music, and animation. ‘ME’ is not merely an artistic curiosity; it is a must-watch, as demonstrated by Hertzfeldt’s ability to combine important subjects with creative storytelling.
