Gerard Butler is opening up about a deeply personal moment tied to the upcoming live-action 'How to Train Your Dragon'. The actor shared his emotional gratitude after learning the film was dedicated to his late mother, Margaret Butler — a tribute that left him both touched and humbled.
Butler shared that director Dean DeBlois dedicated the movie to his mother, who passed away at the age of 81 in February.
Speaking during a recent interview with Magic Radio in the UK, Gerard Butler reflected on how much it meant to see his mother honoured in such a meaningful way. He revealed that he had hoped she would see the film, but deep down, he sensed she might not make it. The dedication by DeBlois was, to him, a deeply moving gesture.

Gerard Butler Shares About His Mom
Known for voicing Stoick the Vast in the original animated trilogy, Gerard Butler drew parallels between his beloved character’s imagined mother and his own. He described his mom as strong, graceful, passionate, and beautiful—qualities he feels would have been shared by Stoick’s mother, had she appeared in the films.
Gerard Butler also reminisced about his childhood dreams, explaining that his mother had always known he was destined for acting. Her unwavering belief in him helped fuel his career and made this dedication all the more emotional.
Director Dean DeBlois later told The Hollywood Reporter that he approached Universal Pictures with the idea to dedicate the film to Butler’s mother, hoping to give the actor a meaningful surprise. DeBlois recognised the depth of Gerard Butler’s grief and felt that dedicating the film to his mother was a powerful and heartfelt way to honour both her memory and the pain her loss left behind.

In the live-action 'How to Train Your Dragon', Mason Thames plays Hiccup, the young Viking who challenges tradition by befriending a dragon rather than slaying it. Butler reprises his role as Stoick, Hiccup’s father, in this highly anticipated retelling. The star-studded cast features Nick Frost bringing humour and heart as Gobber the Belch, while rising talent Nico Parker steps into the role of the fierce and fearless Astrid.
'How to Train Your Dragon' is set to hit theatres on 13th June, bringing a heartfelt new chapter to the beloved franchise—this time with a touching tribute at its core.
