Michael B. Jordan takes on his most ambitious challenge yet in 'Sinners', portraying twin brothers in a chilling vampire thriller movie set in 1930s Mississippi. 'Thicker Than Blood: Becoming the Smokestack Twins' is a behind-the-scenes film in which Jordan interviews director Ryan Coogler, a longstanding collaborator, about the creative process of creating Smoke and Stack. This exclusive look will be available with the film’s upcoming home release.

Michael B. Jordan, now 38, reunites with Coogler for their fifth cinematic venture together, dating back to 'Fruitvale Station'—but 'Sinners' adds a complex twist: dual characters with distinct personalities, histories, and emotional burdens. Smoke and Stack may look alike, but their inner worlds are miles apart.

Coogler claims that the characters' authenticity was greatly influenced by the real-life twin brothers, Noah and Logan Miller. He drew inspiration from the twins’ unique bond, recalling how their influence helped deepen the psychological layers of the film’s protagonists. The goal was to portray the unspoken but powerful dynamics that often exist between identical twins—elements that Jordan studied closely.

Michael B. Jordan's Approach to Playing Twins

Michael B. Jordan gave the parts his full attention, paying close attention to both the emotional and physical details. He discovered that in many twin relationships, one sibling tends to exhibit dominant traits in specific areas. Applying this insight, he crafted subtle distinctions in posture, movement, and emotional expression. Smoke, he explains, is emotionally withdrawn, visibly weighed down by past trauma, while Stack masks his pain with a lighter, more outwardly cheerful demeanour.

To embody both characters convincingly, Michael B. Jordan altered his body language, adjusting how each twin walked and carried himself. The contrast was central to his performance, enabling him to fully inhabit each role without overlap.

In 'Sinners', the Smokestack Twins return to their Southern roots to escape a troubled past by opening a juke joint. But their attempt at a new beginning is quickly disrupted by a growing vampire threat that endangers their community. The film combines horror with rich emotional storytelling, allowing Jordan to showcase both physical transformation and psychological depth.

The ensemble cast of 'Sinners' includes Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, and others, further enriching the film’s dynamic narrative.

Michael B. Jordan's Twin Role Influenced by Real Life

Michael B. Jordan also shared that his preparation for the twin roles drew heavily from his real-life relationships with his brother and close friends who feel like family. These emotional connections helped him act opposite a body double while mentally envisioning the bond that exists between the characters. He explained that every decision made in one take had to be carefully mirrored or responded to in the next when switching roles, creating a layered and technically demanding performance.

Coogler praised the Miller twins for their valuable input, noting that their shared lifestyle, such as using the same phone, provided a real-world example of the deep, often inseparable connection between twins. Their insights gave the film’s creative team a foundation of authenticity to build upon.

Michael B. Jordan’s performance in 'Sinners' is not just a technical achievement, but a deeply human portrayal of two distinct souls linked by blood and circumstance. The film will be available digitally starting 3rd June and on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD beginning 8th July.
