Fans of 'The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants' may have reason to hope — the story might not be over just yet.
As the beloved coming-of-age film celebrates its 20th anniversary, director Ken Kwapis reflected on the franchise’s legacy and the possibility of a long-awaited third instalment. While nothing is confirmed, Kwapis shared that efforts to develop a new sequel have been ongoing, though a satisfying storyline has yet to materialise.
The original 'The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants', released in 2005, quickly became a cult favourite, followed by 'The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants 2' in 2008. The second movie drew inspiration from the second through fourth novels in Ann Brashares’ bestselling series. With five books total — including 'Sisterhood Everlasting', which follows the characters into adulthood — the material is there, but adapting it presents challenges.

Challenges for 'The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants' Third Instalment
One hurdle, Kwapis explained, is aligning the characters’ current life stages with the ages of the real-life cast. While the final book explores the friends’ lives in their late 20s, stars America Ferrera, Blake Lively, Amber Tamblyn, and Alexis Bledel are now in their late 30s and early 40s, prompting the creative team to consider how to evolve the story beyond the source material.
Another factor is the emotional tone of 'Sisterhood Everlasting'. Unlike the earlier books, the final novel introduces a deeply emotional twist that has made producers cautious. Kwapis acknowledged the power of the book but noted its tragic undertones present a storytelling challenge for a film that originally captivated audiences with its warmth and optimism.
Despite these complexities, the close bond between the original cast of 'The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants' continues to fuel hope for a reunion. Over the years, the actresses have maintained strong friendships and expressed mutual interest in returning to their iconic roles. Kwapis, who remains connected with the cast, shared his admiration for their work and his desire to collaborate with them again.

He also reflects on the memories of working with them during the original shoot, many of which are shared in his book 'But What I Really Want to Do Is Direct: Lessons From a Life Behind the Camera'.
With its themes of friendship, growing up, and finding one's place in the world, 'The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants' remains a fan favourite two decades later. While a third film is still in the conceptual phase, the door is very much open.
