‘Palworld’ Review: The Pokemon Game Everyone Wants

‘Palworld’ has made a significant splash, setting records on Steam with its Early Access release. The game merges elements of survival-crafting and monster-catching, drawing inevitable comparisons to popular titles like ‘Ark: Survival Evolved.’

Players find themselves in a vast open world where everything, from flora to fauna, can be harvested for resources to build weapons, bases, and facilities. However, instead of animals, Palworld features anime-style creatures that can be tamed and used for various purposes, from combat to labour.

The game’s premise is familiar: start with nothing, gather resources, and gradually progress through a tech tree to unlock advanced equipment. Capturing and managing “Pals” adds a unique twist, combining real-time creature management akin to Pokémon with survival gameplay. Players venture out equipped with Pal Spheres to capture new creatures, explore the terrain, and engage in battles with both wildlife and hostile NPCs.

One of ‘Palworld”s distinctive features is its blend of cheerful, cartoonish aesthetics with gritty survival mechanics. The juxtaposition can be jarring at times, with the game oscillating between whimsical creature companions armed to the teeth and the harsh realities of survival in a hostile environment. This tonal dissonance, though intriguing, sometimes detracts from the game’s coherence.

Mechanically, ‘Palworld’ offers depth in managing captured Pals, who can be assigned tasks like farming and construction within the player’s base. This automation reduces micromanagement, allowing players to focus on exploration and other activities. However, the game’s eccentricities, such as its portrayal of cute creatures engaged in survivalist activities, may not appeal universally.

While ‘Palworld”s unusual blend of genres and themes provides entertainment and occasional amusement, its current state in Early Access shows potential for further development. Players intrigued by its novel approach to survival crafting and creature management may find plenty to enjoy, despite its quirks and occasional rough edges.
