The hit series ‘Peaky Blinders’ may have wrapped up in 2022, but fans will soon be transported back to Tommy Shelby's world, as a movie adaptation is officially in the works.
Created by Steven Knight, the show captivated audiences with its gripping narrative set in post-World War I Birmingham. The series followed the Shelby family as they built a notorious criminal empire, specialising in illegal betting and bootlegging.

Spanning six successful seasons, ‘Peaky Blinders’ starred Cillian Murphy as the enigmatic and troubled leader, Tommy Shelby. Alongside him were standout performances from Helen McCrory, Paul Anderson, Sophie Rundle, Finn Cole, Tom Hardy, and Anya Taylor-Joy, amongst others. The show’s atmospheric storytelling and gritty depiction of British history made it a global hit.
Now, fans can look forward to the ‘Peaky Blinders’ movie, which creator Steven Knight confirmed in 2021 was already in development. Speaking to a magazine, Knight revealed, "It’s a fully formed idea and it has a beginning, middle, and end. I think it’s going to be a fitting conclusion to the story told so far." The anticipation for the film has only grown since.

By March 2024, Knight shared another promising update, revealing to Birmingham World that filming would commence in September. This was followed by Netflix’s official announcement in June, confirming the movie's production with a teaser image of the script shared on social media, sparking excitement among the show's dedicated fanbase.
As for the cast, ‘Peaky Blinders’ star Cillian Murphy has expressed interest in reprising his role as Tommy Shelby, though with caution. He’s emphasised that he would return only if it feels "right" for the character. Kate Phillips, who portrayed Linda Shelby, Arthur’s ex-wife, shared her enthusiasm, stating, “Of course, hell yeah! I would be thrilled if Steven Knight wants to bring Linda into the film.”

Excitingly, new talent will also join the ‘Peaky Blinders’ universe. In July 2024, a magazine confirmed that ‘Dune’ star Rebecca Ferguson would be part of the film, followed by the casting of Barry Keoghan from ‘Saltburn’. Keoghan mentioned in 2023 that he would love to be part of the project, but noted it must feel "legitimate and justified."
While original cast members are expected to return, Cillian Murphy humorously acknowledged the relentless fan curiosity surrounding the movie. In an interview in 2023, he quipped, “That’s probably the worst thing about ‘Peaky Blinders’ – getting asked about the movie all the time!” Nonetheless, with the film taking shape, the beloved ‘Peaky Blinders’ universe is set to return in style.
