‘Star Wars’ Day: How 4th May Became a Global Celebration

Every year on 4th May, fans from all across the galaxy unite to celebrate one of the most recognisable film series ever: Star Wars. What began as a clever wordplay has evolved into Star Wars Day, a worldwide phenomenon that brings generations together.

“May the 4th be with you,” a brilliant riff on the famous ‘Star Wars’ slogan, “May the Force be with you,” is the origin of the unofficial holiday.  Since then, the day has gained momentum as both brands and fans have joined together to celebrate the renowned sci-fi story.

Despite not being recognised as a public holiday by the government, this day has gained so much popularity that even public leaders have joined in.  This year, the Trump administration chimed in with a meme that included an AI-generated Jedi avatar of Donald Trump, similar to how former President Joe Biden hosted actor Mark Hamill at the White House shortly before May 4th in 2023.

The line was first used in a UK political advertisement thanking Margaret Thatcher in 1979.  Although purists still acknowledge 25th May, the original release date of the first ‘Star Wars’ movie, as the actual anniversary, fans have since embraced the day for unofficial celebrations.  In 2019, even the California Legislature declared 4th May to be Star Wars Day.

With jokes and viewing parties circulating on social media, fan culture has helped to expand celebration over the years.  Potential was immediately seen by brands, and businesses like Nissan and Jameson Whiskey began using this franchise in their advertising.

Since purchasing Lucasfilm in 2012, Disney has made a significant effort to promote this special day. This year, the company launched the new ‘Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld’ series on Disney+, in addition to holding events and distributing associated merchandise.   Furthermore, the 2027 release date for Ryan Gosling’s impending stand-alone ‘Star Wars’ movie was recently announced.

Even churches are becoming involved in Germany.  Attendees at the Protestant congregation’s Star Wars-themed service were dressed in costume and decorated accordingly.  Additionally, the entire town of New Hope, Pennsylvania, which shares its name with the original movie ‘A New Hope’, joins involved, including character appearances and themed cuisine like “YodaRita.”

The commercialisation of modern life has not pleased everyone.  Chris Taylor, author of ‘How Star Wars Conquered Universe’ and senior editor at Mashable, acknowledges that he doesn’t like how popular the once-niche festival has become.  Nevertheless, May 4th continues to be a cherished opportunity for millions of people worldwide to commemorate their favourite galaxy-spanning series.

Through costumes, movie screenings, or just a creative pun, Star Wars Day has become a phenomenon in popular culture and isn’t going anywhere.
