‘The Delinquent Season’: This Romantic Drama Reveals a Rare Side of Cillian Murphy

Cillian Murphy has made a name for himself as one of Hollywood’s most adaptable actors, moving between stage, screen, and television with ease. Murphy is no stranger to complicated characters, having been in big-budget blockbusters like ‘Inception’ and ‘The Dark Knight Trilogy’ and given powerful performances in movies like ‘28 Days Later’ and ‘The Wind That Shakes the Barley’. On the other hand, he hasn’t often played the romantic lead. Although Murphy starred in a few romantic dramas in his early career, such as ‘Watching the Detectives’ (2007) and ‘The Edge of Love’ (2008), his most noteworthy role as a love lead was in the 2018 Irish film ‘The Delinquent Season’.
The film, which is directed by Irish dramatist Mark O’Rowe for the first time, follows the lives of two married couples in suburban Dublin whose marriages are shattered by domestic strife and adultery.

Murphy’s performance of Jim, a regular guy enmeshed in the complexities of his feelings and behaviour, provides a change of pace from his typically dramatic or antagonistic parts. Jim is a man who struggles with vulnerability and remorse, in contrast to his more well-known characters, such as the sardonic Thomas Shelby in ‘Peaky Blinders’ or the eerie parts in ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘A Quiet Place Part II’. Murphy portrays the mental agony of a man who is not the stereotypical hero in a subtle and nuanced manner.
Jim’s incapacity to communicate his emotions is reflected in the poignant silences and nuanced pauses that vividly depict his emotional problems. Murphy’s skill at expressing emotional tension with little words gives the movie a genuine, unvarnished feel. ‘The Delinquent Season’ stands out in his career because of his performance, which demonstrates his variety and reveals a more personal side of the actor.
