‘The Last Stand’ Was Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Second Film After Entering Politics

Arnold Schwarzenegger rose to fame in the 1980s and ’90s as a dominant figure in Hollywood’s action scene, starring in iconic films like ‘Terminator’ and ‘Total Recall’. His career turned unexpectedly when he successfully ran for Governor of California. He put his acting career on hold after ‘Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines’ disappointed at the box office. Returning to Hollywood after his political tenure, Schwarzenegger initially took supporting roles in ‘The Expendables’ series before reclaiming the lead in the 2013 neo-Western action film, ‘The Last Stand’.

‘The Last Stand’ marked Schwarzenegger’s return to top billing, casting him as Sheriff Ray Owens in a small Arizona border town called Sommerton Junction. The plot centres on Owens and his makeshift team confronting a notorious cartel leader, Gabriel Cortez, who attempts to escape to Mexico in a high-speed Corvette. The film blends classic Western elements with contemporary action, echoing the spirit of earlier Westerns while infusing modern sensibilities.

Despite its homage to Western classics like Rio Bravo, ‘The Last Stand’ did not achieve significant box-office success. However, it remains a standout in Schwarzenegger’s filmography post-2000, offering a mix of action and nostalgia for fans of both Western and action genres. The film’s attempt to merge old-school cowboy themes with updated cinematic styles was timely, considering the resurgence of Western-inspired storytelling in films and television series.

In conclusion, while ‘The Last Stand’ did not catapult Schwarzenegger back into the blockbuster spotlight as expected, it stands as a testament to his enduring appeal and willingness to adapt to evolving cinematic trends.

As audiences increasingly embraced new action heroes and franchises in the early 2010s, Schwarzenegger’s return was overshadowed by the changing landscape of Hollywood. Nonetheless, ‘The Last Stand’ remains a notable entry in his career, blending familiar action tropes with a Western-inspired narrative.
