‘The Quiet Girl’: This Emotional Coming-of-Age Movie Made Oscar History

Since ‘Parasite’ took the Oscars by storm, foreign films have gained significant prominence in the U.S. Films like ‘Drive My Car’ ‘Triangle of Sadness,’ and ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ are now common Oscar contenders. Historically, international films were mainly recognized in the Best International Film category, established in the late 1940s.

This category has honoured major filmmakers like Akira Kurosawa, Federico Fellini, and Ingmar Bergman, and continues to spotlight smaller films despite the increasing acceptance of foreign films by the Academy. A notable recent example is 2022’s ‘The Quiet Girl’ (An Cailín Ciúin), directed by Colm Bairéad. It became the first Irish-language feature film nominated at the Oscars.

The film tells the story of nine-year-old Cáit, who is sent to live with distant relatives Eibhlín and Seán to escape her neglectful home. Cáit blossoms in their care, forming a deep bond with the couple, who have their own tragic history. Despite their growing attachment, Cáit must return to her original family, underscoring the film’s themes of nurturing and belonging.

‘The Quiet Girl’ is a testament to the power of a caring environment. Its success at the Oscars marked a milestone for Irish cinema, alongside other Irish nominations like ‘The Long Goodbye’ and ‘The Banshees of Inisherin.’ The film’s quiet, detailed storytelling delivers a poignant and heart-wrenching experience, highlighting the importance of positive reinforcement and loving care.
