The holoprojectors responsible for creating these holograms vary in design, ranging from handheld devices to massive and intricate machines. Consequently, ‘Star Wars’ showcases holograms in diverse forms, exhibiting different shapes, sizes, and image qualities—from distorted blue-tinted projections to advanced full-colour versions.

Contrary to the faded images of the Original Trilogy, the ‘Clone Wars’ era depicted hologram technology as remarkably powerful and versatile, with various species and engineers producing visually distinct and advanced holograms.
While communication stands as the primary function of ‘Star Wars’ holograms, their interactive capabilities have proven to be quite versatile. For instance, the Umbarans utilized interactive holograms as ship controls, opting for them over traditional physical panels.
Taking this interactivity to new heights, the Snivvian bounty hunter Sinrich developed the holographic disguise matrix—a potent, portable emitter creating a holographic field around the wearer. This field could be altered to mimic the appearance of anyone, serving as an ingenious tool for stealth. It not only allowed users to adopt convincing disguises but also offered the flexibility to change appearances if compromised.
The holographic disguise matrix, more than any other holographic application, showcases the technology’s remarkable potential. Given that Sinrich crafted the matrix as a custom device, acquiring copies was challenging, restricting its usage to elite bounty hunters. These limitations and faults prevented matrices, and holograms in general, from becoming widespread tools for deception in the galaxy.

This visual element enhances the expression of emotions, surpassing the capabilities of purely audio or written messages. Notably, the holograms of characters like Maul effectively convey their sinister presence, creating an impact comparable to their in-person appearances.
This is exemplified in Maul’s holographic representation in Solo and his ominous message to Obi-Wan in the ‘Clone Wars’ Season 4 episode ‘Revenge.’ Beyond being a mere communication method, holograms, by showcasing the sender, empower actors to deliver performances as they naturally would, contributing to the richness of Star Wars’ famously “lived-in” universe.
