The Significance of Astral Projection in ‘Behind Her Eyes’

The 2021 ‘Behind Her Eyes’ by Erik Richter Strand, is a psychological thriller on OTT, that starts out as an apparently typical love triangle involving Adele, David, and Louise.  But as it explores the unsettling idea of astral projection, the story takes a supernatural turn, including themes of deceit and mind control that fundamentally alter the plot.

The ability to separate one’s consciousness from the physical body and move across various areas without being visible is known as astral projection, or an out-of-body experience (OBE).  Throughout the series, Adele exposes Louise to the seemingly harmless practice of dream control, which quickly takes on a sinister undertone.

As the narrative progresses, it becomes evident that Adele has perfected astral projection, which she uses to influence and listen in on others around her.  But the startling truth is that Adele is not really herself; Rob, a buddy from her past, used astral projection to take over her body, switch souls with her, and kill her.

The show’s themes of duplicity, power, and control revolve around this supernatural component.  What initially seems to be a magical talent soon transforms into a malevolent tool of deceit and manipulation.  ‘Behind Her Eyes’ asks viewers to reevaluate their perceptions of truth and trust by fusing psychological drama with otherworldly aspects.

In the disturbing finale of the series, Rob takes over Louise’s body, trapping her in Adele’s and causing her to suffer the same terrible fate.  The show transcends the conventional thriller genre by using astral projection in its narrative to provide a horrifying examination of identity, possession, and the terrible results of unbridled power.
