‘The Simpsons’ Season 36: A Perfect Opportunity to Revive a Classic Character

The long-running series, ‘The Simpsons,’ is gearing up for its thirty-sixth season, and it looks like fans are in for a treat. At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, the show’s creators teased several exciting developments, including a stellar lineup of guest stars. Among them is comedy legend Danny DeVito, whose return has sparked much speculation and excitement.

DeVito, who has graced both TV and film for decades, was one of the first major guest stars on ‘The Simpsons.’ His character, Herb Powell, debuted in season 2 but hasn’t been seen since season 3. This makes his confirmed appearance in the upcoming season 36 all the more intriguing. While DeVito could be playing a new character or even himself, many fans are hoping for the return of Herb Powell.

Herb Powell was introduced in the episode ‘Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?’ as Homer Simpson’s half-brother, conceived from a one-night stand by Abe Simpson. Herb and Homer’s reunion in season 2 was memorable but led to Herb’s financial ruin due to Homer’s well-meaning but disastrous help. Herb returned in season 3’s ‘Brother, Can You Spare Two Dimes?’ where Homer tried to make amends, investing in Herb’s next business venture.

Since season 3, Herb hasn’t made a formal appearance, though a brief mention in season 24 hinted at his misfortune. However, The Simpsons has a history of reviving and reinventing supporting characters, like Artie Ziff, suggesting Herb could return with his fortune intact. The episode ‘Bart’s Birthday’ in season 36 seems a fitting opportunity for Herb’s return, potentially bringing gifts and joining in the celebrations.

Herb Powell was a brilliant addition to the early seasons of The Simpsons. He provided a deep connection to Homer, with plenty of storytelling potential. His return could add a rich layer of narrative, offering a contrast to characters like Mr. Burns and providing fresh perspectives on themes like wealth disparity in America.
