This 22-Year-Old Japanese Horror Film Every ‘Ring’ Fan Should Watch

The highly anticipated anime adaptation of Junji Ito’s classic horror manga ‘Uzumaki’ is set to premiere on Adult Swim on September. Fans who have been eagerly waiting since the series entered production in 2019 can find satisfaction in the 2000 live-action film adaptation, which is currently streaming on Prime.

The film is a captivating adaptation of Ito’s manga, blending humour and horror in a way that’s true to the original work. It offers a unique spin on typical J-Horror themes, combining eerie elements with moments of dark humor. The story revolves around a small town cursed by an obsession with spirals, leading to disturbing transformations and tragic events. A teenage couple, Kirie and Shuichi, struggle to escape the curse as their world unravels around them.

Serialized from 1998 to 1999,  ‘Uzumaki’ quickly gained fame for its surreal and unsettling stories, prompting a film adaptation to be rushed into production before the manga even concluded. Released in 2000, this film joined the J-Horror movement, alongside other notable works like ‘Ringu’ and ‘Ju-On: The Grudge’, sharing themes of isolation, obsession, and supernatural curses. Directed by Higuchinsky, the film stands out as both a gem of J-Horror and a distinctive work in its own right.

The movie features a blend of playful humour and disturbing body horror, set against a fantastical small-town backdrop. Its unique visual style, characterized by a surreal colour palette and inventive effects, captures the essence of Ito’s manga while presenting an original take.

The J-Horror genre, which emerged prominently in the late 1990s and early 2000s, often explores themes of internal dread and societal malaise. This is evident in films like ‘Ju-On’ and ‘Ringu’, which depict curses as metaphors for personal and societal anxieties. ‘Uzumaki’ fits into this tradition, presenting the spiral as an intrusive, consuming force.
