Jaume Collet-Serra’s 2009 horror film, portraying a couple unwittingly adopting a grown woman posing as a 9-year-old, is shockingly rooted in real-life events. Despite mixed reviews, Isabelle Fuhrman’s performance as Esther in ‘Orphan’ resonated hauntingly with audiences. The film’s inspiration comes from Barbora Skrlová, an actual woman discovered posing as a 13-year-old boy in Norway.

Interestingly, a decade later, a similar incident unfolded involving an Indiana couple adopting Natalia Grace, a six-year-old Ukrainian girl with dwarfism and a dark history. The sequel, ‘Orphan: First Kill’ released in August 2022, aligns eerily with these real-life stories, unveiling disturbing parallels behind the ‘Orphan’ movie’s premise and the unsettling events that inspired it.

The chilling true story behind the movie revolves around Barbora Skrlová, who gained international notoriety in 2008 when the 13-year-old boy she posed as in Norway went missing, only to be revealed as a 33-year-old Czech woman. Skrlová’s crimes began in the Czech Republic, where she manipulated the mentally ill Klara Mauerova and her sister into abusive acts against Klara’s sons.

The disturbing events, loosely adapted for ‘Orphan’ and ‘Orphan: First Kill’, showcase Skrlová’s control over the family and her escape by posing as a child. The real-life case, marked by shocking twists and parallels to the films, unfolds as the harrowing inspiration for the Orphan movie series.
