‘Warcraft’ Movie: From Box Office Bust to Streaming Sensation

The video game adaptation ‘Warcraft’ has found new life on Netflix, securing a spot in the platform’s top ten movies. Announced in 2006 but released a decade later in 2016, the film initially fell short at the box office, despite notable international earnings. However, it is now being rediscovered by viewers who missed it during its theatrical release. Since its arrival on Netflix on 1st July, ‘Warcraft’ maintained a position in the top ten for over a week.

‘Warcraft’, based on the popular video game franchise, explores the world of Azeroth as it faces an invasion by orc warriors from another realm. Directed by Duncan Jones, known for ‘Moon’ and ‘Source Code’, the film features actors like Travis Fimmel, Toby Kebbell, and Paula Patton. The movie invested heavily in creating its fantasy universe, enlisting Industrial Light & Magic for visual effects, including motion-capture for key orc characters, and Weta Workshop for practical effects, the same company behind ‘The Lord of the Rings’.

Despite the film’s initial struggles, the landscape for video game adaptations has shifted significantly. Recent successes include ‘The Super Mario Bros.Movie’, which grossed over $1 billion worldwide in 2023, and Paramount Pictures ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ films. ‘Detective Pikachu’ set a new bar in 2019 as the highest-grossing video game adaptation of its time. With the upcoming release of ‘Borderlands’, another star-studded video game movie, the trend continues to grow.

‘Warcraft’ might have been slightly ahead of its time, arriving just before this wave of successful video game adaptations. Its dedicated filmmaker, skilled cast, and substantial budget weren’t enough to secure immediate success, but the current streaming environment and evolving audience attitudes toward video game movies are giving it a second chance. ‘Warcraft’ is now streaming on Netflix.
