Director Villeneuve has a wealth of material to draw from for the next ‘Dune’ instalment, potentially incorporating elements from both Dune Messiah and Children of Dune. In the latter, Leto II and Ghanima face off against their Baron-possessed aunt, leading to a gripping narrative.

Leto II’s pivotal decision to embark on the Golden Path, ensuring humanity’s evolution, sees him transform into a human-sandworm hybrid using a sand trout skin, granting him near-indestructibility and an extended lifespan.

To solidify House Atreides’ legacy, Leto weds his sister, despite Ghanima bearing children from another union. This unsettling twist features Paul’s offspring marrying and one becoming part sandworm.

Alia Atreides stands out as one of Dune’s most enigmatic figures. From her extraordinary abilities as a toddler with Reverend Mother powers to her role as regent for Paul’s children, her journey is anything but ordinary. Despite her gifts, she grapples with the burden of genetic memory, often haunted by the troubling legacies of her ancestors, including the sinister Baron Harkonnen.

In Children of Dune, she becomes a vessel for the Baron’s influence, serving as a complex antagonist.

In ‘Dune Messiah,’ we dive deeper into the complexities of the characters, particularly Alia Atreides, born with extraordinary abilities due to spice exposure in the womb. Unlike in the book, the movie portrays her as an unborn child communicating telepathically, avoiding the unsettling depiction of a knife-wielding toddler.

Later, twins Leto II and Ghanima, born to Chani and Paul, inherit remarkable abilities, including genetic memory. In a surprising turn, infant Leto II saves his father’s life by offering him a vision during an attack, showcasing the twins’ pivotal roles in the storyline.

Ghola Creations

‘Dune Messiah’ introduces a fascinating concept: gholas, artificial humans replicated from deceased individuals. Unlike typical clones, gholas are crafted from the remains of the dead using Axlotl tanks. This unique creation process allows for the recreation of almost anyone from just a single cell. The Bene Tleilax, the masterminds behind gholas, use them for their ends.

In the story, they attempt to use a ghola of Paul’s former mentor, Duncan Idaho, to assassinate him. However, Duncan’s consciousness asserts itself within the ghola body, complicating their plans.

Shape Shifters

The Bene Tleilax employ a unique type of servant called Face Dancers, bred by their Masters. These shapeshifters have the remarkable ability to imitate any human, making them valuable spies or assassins. Their name comes from the way their faces seem to “dance” as they shift appearances. This skill allows the Tleilaxu to infiltrate organizations and governments effortlessly.

However, Bene Gesserit acolytes can detect them through changes in pheromones. In Dune Messiah, these two groups unite against Paul, forming a formidable alliance. If a Face Dancer remains in one guise for too long, they can become delusional, believing they truly are the person they’re impersonating.
