What to Expect From Colleen Hoover's 'It Ends With Us' Sequel

Given the success of ‘It Ends With Us’ as a major summer hit, it's no surprise that fans are speculating about a potential sequel. Fortunately, Colleen Hoover has already written a follow-up novel titled ‘It Starts With Us.’ This sequel picks up just an hour after the events of the first book, continuing the story of the same characters. If you haven't read the book or were unaware of its existence, here’s a breakdown of what to expect from this compelling companion to the Blake Lively-led movie.

Although ‘It Starts With Us’ was released six years after  ‘It Ends With Us’ it directly continues the narrative. The story resumes with Lily's brief encounter with Atlas during a custody exchange with Ryle. While their meeting is cut short due to work obligations, the tension quickly escalates as Lily becomes increasingly wary of Ryle's jealousy towards Atlas. Despite Lily’s anxiety about her child’s well-being and the challenges of co-parenting with Ryle, Atlas remains supportive, willing to wait as Lily navigates these complexities.

As the story unfolds, Lily and Atlas rekindle their relationship with a newfound maturity. However, Ryle continues to be a toxic presence, harassing Lily through text messages and unannounced visits. Concerned for her daughter Emmy’s safety, Lily decides to seek full custody. Meanwhile, Atlas discovers that his restaurant has been vandalized by his estranged younger brother, Josh, whom he eventually takes under his care.

One of the highlights of ‘It Starts With Us’ is the focus on Lily and Atlas’s love story, offering readers a chance to see Lily finally experience the love and respect she deserves. The novel culminates in Atlas preparing to marry Lily, with heartfelt wedding vows that reflect their enduring connection.

Notably, the book does not offer a redemption arc for Ryle, recognizing that some actions are unforgivable. While a film adaptation could explore these themes further, ‘It Starts With Us’ provides a more satisfying conclusion for Lily, leaving the troubled Ryle behind.
