What was behind Logic1000’s ‘Seismic’ Debut

In the realm of dance music, timing can be transformative, and Logic1000, also known as Samantha Poulter, understands this well. In 2019, her breakthrough single ‘DJ Logic Please Forgive Me’ was featured in Four Tet’s Coachella set, marking a pivotal moment. Now, five years later, her debut album ‘Mother’ emerges, influenced by the birth of her daughter and a breakthrough in mental health.

Poulter, discussing the record for the first time in December, shares that post-childbirth, the urge to create became more deliberate, aiming for something truly seismic. Recorded with her partner and longtime producer Tom McAllister in their Berlin home, ‘Mother’ is a love letter to the house music scene that has been a constant in her life.

Poulter wanted to demonstrate her creative journey to her daughter, making this album a significant part of her legacy. While not a ‘concept’ record about parenthood, the lessons of motherhood subtly permeate each track, resulting in an album filled with wonder and the evolution of a creative partnership. The timing of ‘Mother’ aligns perfectly with Poulter’s life, marking a new chapter in her artistic journey.

Now, Poulter and her album ‘Mother’ join the latest trend of electronic producers infusing their creations with personal narratives. This wave includes Sofia Kourtesis, whose debut ‘Madres’ weaved familial tales into beats, and Yaeji, whose ‘With A Hammer’ explored internalized anger and relationship dynamics.

For fans following Poulter’s ascent, from remixes for Christine and The Queens to the stellar 2021 EP ‘You’ve Got The Whole Night To Go’ and collaborations with rising stars like Yuné Pinku, ‘Mother’ marks a highly anticipated return.

Seated at the centre of a burgeoning creative universe, Poulter embraces motherhood as a newfound wellspring of confidence and creativity. The album, initially slated for release in 2023, was delayed to 2024 as Poulter prioritized her mental health. Despite the protracted journey, she emphasizes that this only deepens her affection for the record.

Poulter’s rapid ascent in the music industry is just part of her story. Diagnosed with schizophrenia, anxiety, and depression at the age of 25, her journey took a significant turn when a Forensic Order, following a traumatic episode, was lifted. This marked the beginning of her musical journey.

Despite managing her mental health challenges, the intersection of a burgeoning career and motherhood presented a new set of obstacles. Touring the U.S. just three months postpartum proved challenging, prompting her to pause live engagements for 10 months in 2023.

This hiatus allowed Poulter to engage in intensive therapy, shifting her focus from managing schizophrenia to addressing root causes such as childhood trauma.

This transformation not only brought self-confidence and a sense of safety but also changed her approach to touring and performing. Reflecting on the journey, Poulter emphasizes the power of understanding and awareness in healing and gaining confidence.
