Why Adam Warlock is the Most Underrated Character in the MCU
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has introduced many characters whose powers fall short compared to their comic book counterparts. Doctor Strange, for instance, wields less magical strength in the MCU than he does in the comics, where he reaches the height of Sorcerer Supreme. Similarly, Drax the Destroyer, initially created in the comics to defeat Thanos with immense strength, is depicted as a grieving alien in the MCU who lacks the power to take on Thanos.
However, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ addressed this discrepancy with Adam Warlock. While he appeared formidable in his debut, nearly defeating the Guardians, his abilities did not match the heights of his comic book version. This is explained within the film’s canon: Adam Warlock, born with immense power and potential in the comics, was still maturing and lacked full control over his abilities.

In the comics, Adam Warlock is not only incredibly strong and durable but also possesses powers like regeneration, clairvoyance, telepathy, and cosmic awareness. These abilities allowed him to perform feats like wielding the Infinity Gauntlet and outmatching even Captain Marvel. The MCU’s version, however, is still evolving. In his first appearance, Adam shows remarkable power but is also shown to be inexperienced and prone to errors, such as being easily incapacitated despite his abilities.
His struggles, including being overpowered by the High Evolutionary, are attributed to him being prematurely awakened from his cocoon.

This early awakening explains why he is not yet as formidable as his comic book self. Despite this, Adam Warlock’s potential is evident. His survival of severe injuries and his ability to challenge powerful enemies indicate significant growth potential.
As Adam continues to learn and develop, especially now that he’s aligned with the Guardians, he has the opportunity to mature into the powerful character he’s meant to be. His current limitations are a setup for future growth, making him a compelling and dynamic character in the MCU’s evolving landscape.
