Why Fans Still Deserve Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Hellboy’ 3

Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Hellboy’ films are considered modern classics within the superhero and monster genres. Despite a 2019 reboot of the franchise, it failed to capture the distinctive style and depth of del Toro’s earlier adaptations of Mike Mignola’s comic series.

Del Toro has enjoyed tremendous success since directing ‘Hellboy II: The Golden Army’ in 2008, yet fans (and del Toro himself) still long for the completion of his ‘Hellboy’ trilogy, with Ron Perlman reprising his role as the iconic demon, Hellboy. Unfortunately, with del Toro stating that any hope for a third film has likely vanished, and with a new reboot (‘Hellboy: The Crooked Man’) set to release soon, the dream of seeing Perlman and del Toro return to the ‘Hellboy’ universe seems further away than ever.

The challenges of producing a third ‘Hellboy’  movie have always been immense, with del Toro acknowledging the financial and technical difficulties involved. His previous films stood out for their intricate design, blending mythology, fairy tale elements, and Lovecraftian horror in a visually stunning way. The world of ‘Hellboy’  is rich with vibrant, otherworldly landscapes, and creatures, making it a costly and complicated endeavour to bring to life.

Fans have yearned for a resolution to the open-ended storyline in ‘Hellboy II’, which hinted at Hellboy’s dark destiny as the bringer of the apocalypse.

Del Toro envisioned ‘Hellboy 3’  as a grand, darker conclusion to the trilogy, but the scale and budget required made it impossible to materialize. Still, many believe that the fans deserve to see this epic conclusion, much like the unfinished story would feel incomplete without closure, similar to if ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy had ended prematurely. While it seems unlikely, the hope for ‘Hellboy 3’ endures among the fanbase.
