Why Gandalf Faced Challenges Against The Witch-King in ‘The Lord of The Rings’

In the extended versions of ‘The Lord of the Rings’, Gandalf has a notable encounter with the Witch-king of Angmar. This scene has raised questions among fans, especially considering the immense power of wizards in Middle-earth. While both characters are formidable, the Witch-king, who is the Lord of the Nazgûl, is a ghostly wraith and a strong servant of Sauron, having conquered significant territories for his master. Nevertheless, Gandalf, as a Maiar, possesses even greater power as one of the angelic beings sent to combat Sauron.

Despite his capabilities, Gandalf has previously struggled, particularly when he faced the Balrog in ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’, where they were evenly matched due to the Balrog’s own angelic origins.

Gandalf ultimately triumphed, but not without great personal cost. In the Battle of Minas Tirith, he confronts the Witch-king, who arrives on a Fellbeast, and in a tense exchange, the Witch-king shatters Gandalf’s staff, leaving him wounded and momentarily incapacitated. This moment serves to highlight the Witch-king’s danger, and Gandalf is saved only by the timely arrival of the Riders of Rohan.

The struggle is compounded by the Istari’s limitations; they were instructed to assist and inspire rather than directly engage in conflict. Gandalf’s true strength lies in his ability to unite and motivate others.

Although his fight with the Witch-king seems uneven, it plays a crucial role in amplifying the tension of the battle, making Eowyn’s eventual triumph over the Witch-king more impactful. Eowyn’s victory, a significant twist given the prophecy that “no man” can defeat him, is ultimately a testament to her strength and cunning, showcasing that true heroism comes from unexpected places.
