Why Yuji Itadori is the Perfect Protagonist for ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’

‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ has captured the hearts of many with its gripping storyline and complex characters. While every character in the series plays a crucial role, Yuji Itadori stands out as the central figure whose journey resonates deeply with viewers. Surprisingly, Yuji wasn’t always intended to be the main character. In fact, the series’ creator, Gege Akutami, initially envisioned a different lead.

In a recent Q&A session for the ‘Jujutsu Kaise’n exhibition, Akutami disclosed that Megumi Fushiguro was originally meant to be the protagonist. This revelation is unexpected, given Yuji’s prominence in the series. In the early concept of the story, titled ‘Jujutsu Sousen,’ Megumi was planned to be the host body for Sukuna, not Yuji. This would have shifted the narrative dramatically, placing Yuji in a secondary role rather than as the focal point of the story.

Most fans are familiar with Yuta Okkotsu as the protagonist of ‘Jujutsu Kaisen 0,’ the precursor to the full series. However, in this initial concept, Megumi was set to take the lead. This alternate version of the story would have offered a significantly different perspective, with Yuji’s character relegated to a supporting role. Ultimately, Akutami decided to make Yuji the main character, a choice that has proven to be very effective.

Yuji’s character is particularly relatable. Unlike Megumi, who is more reserved and emotionally distant, Yuji’s journey into the world of jujutsu sorcery begins by chance. He initially seeks to protect his friends, and his accidental ingestion of Sukuna’s finger forces him into a world he didn’t actively pursue. This element of chance and necessity makes Yuji’s story compelling and accessible, as he evolves from an average high school student into a formidable sorcerer.

Yuji’s appeal lies in his everyman quality. He is thrust into extraordinary circumstances but remains grounded in his humanity, which makes it easy for viewers to see themselves in his shoes. Akutami describes Yuji as a “universal protagonist,” highlighting his ability to connect with a diverse audience through his relatable traits and experiences.

The dynamic between Yuji, Megumi, and Nobara Kugisaki is integral to the series. Yuji’s growth is supported by his friends, each of whom brings distinct traits to the table. Megumi’s intelligence and powerful techniques complement Yuji’s more adaptable and evolving nature. This trio’s interaction enriches the narrative, providing depth and variety.

Yuji’s journey is marked by significant development. Unlike Megumi, whose character is more fixed, Yuji’s adaptability and ongoing growth make him a compelling protagonist. His evolution from a novice to a skilled sorcerer, guided by mentors like Gojo and Nanami, adds to the series’ intrigue.
