The film adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical ‘Wicked’ is edging closer to its highly anticipated release, bringing fans one step closer to the magic of Oz on the big screen. Set to premiere in theatres, ‘Wicked’ promises to be a cinematic extravaganza. However, some confusion arose when the film's marketing and title lacked any mention of ‘Part One,’ despite earlier announcements that it would be split into two parts. Director Jon M. Chu recently addressed the omission, explaining that the decision was made to present the two films as distinct, standalone experiences rather than labelling them simply as a continuation.
Chu aims to create two unique films within the ‘Wicked’ universe, with each instalment offering its own narrative arc and emotional payoff. In a bid to build excitement, Entertainment Weekly recently released exclusive images from the film, including a striking shot of Jonathan Bailey’s character, Fiyero, in front of a mysterious, clock-like structure. While fans speculated about the clock’s significance, Chu cheekily responded, “I will neither confirm nor deny that it’s a clock.” He later revealed that the image showed a rotating bookshelf, tying into the theme of Oz’s circular design aesthetic.

The director provided more insight into Fiyero’s role within the film, describing him as a rebellious figure who disrupts the order at Shiz University. "Fiyero gets to break the rules," Chu explained, highlighting how the character brings about change within the strict academic environment. This disruption signals a shift in the energy on campus, with the students beginning to embrace a new sense of freedom under Fiyero’s influence.
While the two-part structure of ‘Wicked’ remains intact, Chu has emphasised the importance of making each film a satisfying experience in its own right. He stated, “If we were going to split it into two, we need to make sure that movie one is emotionally satisfying.” Chu’s goal is to ensure audiences feel fulfilled by the first film, rather than merely anticipating the second part. His intention is to avoid leaving viewers in a state of impatient longing, a tactic he finds frustrating in other franchises.

Instead, Chu hopes to deliver a film that leaves audiences on a high, deeply connected to the story and its characters. “This should leave you with the highest of highs and so connected to these women,” he said, emphasising the strong emotional core that will anchor the story. With its compelling narrative and grand musical numbers, Wicked aims to resonate with both fans of the original musical and newcomers alike.
One of the film’s standout moments, teased in the trailer, is the performance of ‘Dancing Through Life’, a key number from the stage production. Performed by Jonathan Bailey’s Fiyero, the song serves as a rallying cry for the students of Shiz to break free from their academic confines and dance with abandon. The scene takes place in the university’s library, where Fiyero encourages his classmates to let loose and enjoy life to the fullest.
This musical number not only showcases Bailey’s charisma but also sets the tone for the rebellious spirit that defines his character. Fiyero’s carefree attitude contrasts sharply with the rigid atmosphere of Shiz, making him a key catalyst for change within the story. As fans eagerly await the film’s release, moments like these promise to capture the heart of ‘Wicked’s’ enchanting world.
With its intricate characters, lavish set designs, and emotionally charged musical performances, ‘Wicked’ is shaping up to be a cinematic experience like no other. Whether audiences are drawn in by the spellbinding music or the rich narrative, Chu's vision for the adaptation is sure to leave a lasting impression.
