Bella Ciao, Money Heist theme song – Lockdown Version

Netflix Original Series Money Heist, is undoubtedly the reigning King of all TV Shows binged during the coronavirus lockdown. And so, we decided to take the show’s incredibly catchy theme song, Bella Ciao, and give it a lockdown spin.

History of the original song

Literally translated, Bella Ciao means Goodbye beautiful. An Italian protest folk anthem, the song’s roots trace all the way to 19th century rice field workers. The song was originally sung as “Alla mattina appena alzata“. The anti-fascist resistance by the Italian partisans between 1943 and 1945 adopted this song as an anthem. Worldwide, versions of this song is used as an anti-fascist hymn of freedom and resistance.

In 2015, the song faced a ban in some municipalities of Northern Italy, ruled by the right-wing League. One of the most famous recordings is that of the Italian folk singer Giovanna Daffini, who recorded both the mondina and the partisan versions.

What does Bella Ciao mean in Money Heist?

In the popular Netflix show, Money Heist, The Professor and Berlin’s father was a strong advocate of the Italian Resistance. The first major instance we see of Bella Ciao comes in Season 3 when the brothers sing this song before the Royal Mint of Spain heist. The Professor and Berlin are having dinner together before breaking out into the song.

Bella Ciao is also a symbol of freedom. In Money Heist Season 1, Moscow knows freedom is close the minute he finds dirt in the vault. At the same time, the song plays on the radio. Moscow and Denver sing along with the rest of the group coming together in celebration.
