Celebrating ‘World Music Day’ with the Most Iconic Hits
The Fête de la Musique, also known in English as ‘World Music Day’, is an annual celebration that takes place on June 21st. On this day, people are urged to play music outside, in public spaces to celebrate it and rejoice in the sensory pleasures it leaves behind.
The first all-day musical celebration on the day of the summer solstice was originated by Jack Lang, Minister of Culture of France, as well as by Maurice Fleuret; it was celebrated in Paris in 1982. From then on, ‘World Music Day’ has become an International phenomenon, celebrated uniquely across numerous countries.
And we are taking the festivities forward in our own special way. Right now, we’re looking at hit tunes from across the world, that have made their mark on countless generations. Despite language barriers, these songs have united people, who all share a love for these distinctive, groovy sounds.
So, let’s dive right in, shall we?
2. Next up, is ‘Waka Waka’. Crafted by Shakira and the South African band, Freshlyground, this tune’s music video has amassed over 2.5 billion views on YouTube. We’ll give you a minute to let that sink in.

3. ‘Gangnam Style’ just made its entrance. This gem was created by the South Korean musician, Psy, in 2012. In no time, this tune managed to score a Guiness World Record for the most “liked” video on YouTube.

4. ‘Yé ké yé ké’ is a song by the Guinean recording artist, Mory Kante. Released in 1987, this was the first African single to sell over one million copies.

5. The groovy tune, ‘Kiss Kiss’ made its landing in 1997, created by the Turkish singer Tarkan. The music video features the artist doing his best to dodge a crowd of girls who are out to give the man a big ol’ smooch.

6. Next in line is the infectious number, ‘Didi’. Crafted by the Algerian artist, Khaled, in 1992, this catchy tune was even featured in many Bollywood films, including ‘Shreeman Aashiq’, ‘Airlift’ and many more.

7. The gentle yet groovy ‘La Bamba’, has been covered by numerous artists but most notably by Los Lobos. Interestingly enough, the lyrics of this song actually guides you through the dance, step by step.

8. Speaking of dance, hopping in next is ‘Alors on danse’ which translates to, ‘So We Dance’. The Belgian musician, Stromae, released this fantastic tune in 2009. Due to his distinctive use of beats, Stromae has been touted as the “face of the New Beat generation”.

9. The wonderful ‘Lambada’, was recorded by the French-Brazillian pop group, Kaoma. This tune was released in 1989 and featured in the band’s debut album, ‘Worldbeat’.

10. And finally, we’re wrapping up with the fabulous song, ‘Alane’. Crafted by the Cameroonian artist, Wes, this tune came out in 1997. And interestingly enough, Wes is also best known for “In Youpendi”, a song from the Lion King II soundtrack.
