Sometimes we forget that our favourite singers also live a life as scary and confusing as the rest of us. Celebrities need a medium to express their emotions and present their realities to the people who love them so much, and that is why they document their lives and give us a part of themselves. Let’s look at a few must watch documentaries based on the life of singers!
Selena Gomez’s ‘My Mind & Me’ follows the singer’s journey over a period of six years, from the premature end of her ‘Revival’ tour in 2016 to who she is today. The documentary also elaborates upon her kidney transplant and her mental health issues at length. Selena Gomez began her career as a child actor, and then turned her life around with her amazing acting, singing and entrepreneurial skills. The documentary shows why despite her multiple stays in rehab facilities, she is still one of the most loved musicians in pop right now.
Taylor Swift’s ‘Miss Americana’ reflects on the singer’s lowest point in her career. This was when many people turned on her after the most controversial feud of the decade with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian. Apart from that, the documentary shows her finally wrapping up the ‘Reputation’ tour and revealing her political views for the first time in her career.
"'Miss Americana' offers an effective backstage look at Taylor Swift that works best when the megastar opens up about her life and experiences in surprisingly candid ways," wrote Newsday's Robert Levin.
Katy Perry’s ‘Part of Me’ follows Perry through her ‘California Dreams’ tour, after she broke records as the first female artist to have five No. 1 singles from one album alone. While her professional career as a singer was reaching astronomical heights, she was facing multiple problems with her marriage to Russell Brand. The documentary also captures her marriage slowly falling apart.
"Ever the professional, the pop star has surrounded herself with people who know how to make a tour work — but none of them seem well-equipped to give a heartbroken 27-year-old girl a much needed hug," wrote a columnist about her documentary.
Billie Eilish’s 'Billie Eilish: The World's a Little Blurry' encapsulates the most personal moments from her life. It documents her life ever since her SoundCloud hit ‘Ocean Eyes’, to her gigantic tour, headlining Coachella set and her first ever break-up. She wasn’t even 20 and she had seen the world in all its glory.
"'The World's a Little Blurry' hews close to the Eilish mythology, yet still offers a rare glimpse behind the making of a teen pop star," wrote Alessa Dominguez for Buzzfeed News.
Madonna’s ‘Madonna: Truth or Dare’ documents Madonna in her realest form. The documentary visits her behind-the-scenes look of the ‘Blond Ambition’ tour, her relationship with A-lister Warren Beatty, and contains cameos from stars like Al Pacino and Kevin Costner. The documentary showed a stark contrast between the reel and real life by shooting all behind-the-scenes footage in black and white and performances in colour.
"'Truth or Dare,' which comes on as if it were truth and dare, sets out to give us both the 'real' offstage Madonna, shot in grainy black and white, and the performing Madonna during her 'Blond Ambition' tour, shot in colour," wrote Jonathan Rosenbaum for the Chicago Reader.
