5 Things We Learned From Rihanna’s NAACP Speech
Rihanna was recently awarded at the NAACP Image Awards and gave a badass speech that was honest, straightforward and quite honestly, necessary. The National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People recognises and commends the achievements of people of colour and the work done by communities for the upliftment of others
Well, on her time away from music, and in her career in general, she has always used her platform for good, spreading awareness about oppressed communities and working towards inclusivity in every sphere of life. Her beauty line “Fenty Beauty” and her lingerie line “Savage X Fenty” are held in such high regard for this reason, precisely.
The superstar took the stage for an acceptance speech that should honestly be turned into posters because PREACH, QUEEN. Here are some things we learned from the acceptance speech:
1. RiRi will Slay any Event:
She accepted her award dripping in diamonds and expensive clothing, but kept it classy, reminding us all that she can slay any event, anywhere and any time.
2. She’s a Humble Queen:
She began her speech by making it clear that she is only a small part of this movement; that the movement is bigger than her and she’s only a small part of all the amazing work being done by people world over.
3. She’s All for Equality; Everyone’s:
It’s not just about standing up for your community; it’s about standing up for humanity. While talking about problems we all face, she emphasised on how important it is for us to stand up for everyone, not just those communities that we are a part of.
4. We Cannot Rule, Divided:
If a change is what you want, you must stand together. Speaking from years of experience with social work, RiRi emphasised how important it is to stick together in times of social disparity. “If there’s anything I’ve learned it’s that we can only fix this world together. We can’t do it divided, I cannot emphasise that enough,” she said.
5. She’s A Savage
She may have ended her speech with a call for unity, but she signed off in signature Rihanna fashion – with a little savagery to remind you who’s boss. She said “So while we’re marching, and protesting, and posting about the Michael Jrs and the Tatiana Jefferson’s of the world., tell your friends to pull up.”
The world would be a better place if we all listened to Rihanna, and that’s that.
