Andrew Garfield recently opened up about the personal experiences he brought to his new film with Florence Pugh, ‘We Live in Time’. During the film’s world premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, Garfield, 41, reflected on how his personal experiences of love and loss shaped his performance, referencing director John Crowley.
Garfield said, "It's a collection of experiences one goes through in life — personal loss, personal love. We were fortunate to bring those private feelings to the film in ways that were healing for us, and hopefully for the audience too."
In ‘We Live in Time’, Garfield and Pugh, 28, portray a couple who meet by chance, fall in love, and navigate personal tragedies together. Speaking about the preparation for the film, Garfield noted that the scenes felt unpredictable, but his connection with Pugh allowed them to reach authentic, honest moments. He praised Pugh, saying, "You don't want to know what the next take will be. You just tune in and trust your scene partner, and Florence is rare in that way."

The film marks Garfield's first feature role since 2021, where he appeared in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and ‘tick, tick... BOOM!’ Reflecting on his role in ‘We Live in Time’, where he plays Tobias alongside Pugh’s character Almut, Garfield shared how he embraced a sense of surrender in this project more than in any previous one. He added, "Watching the film tonight moved me in ways I hadn’t been before."
‘We Live in Time’ is set to hit theatres on 11th October.
